After a forced break from competition due to my wrist injures I was really looking forward to getting back on the bike for the Australian Classic Championships. This year the event was held at Lakeside Raceway in Queensland, a circuit that has been closed for competition for over ten years. After some alterations to the circuit it was approved for competition this year.
The last time I raced at Lakeside was back when I was on a 250cc bike in the late 1990’s so it may as well have been a new circuit for all that I remembered of the layout.
Riding the same machine that I raced at this years Phillip Island Classic I was comfortable straight away and the wrists didn’t give me to much grief. After qualifying fastest for our three race schedule, all was going to plan aboard the pre 1982 Superbike.
Winning both my races saturday and sunday was the icing on the cake for a return from injury.
Soon after my last race there was a tragic accident in the final period 6 race and rider Steve Anderson lost his life from injuries sustained. Racing was immediately stopped and we all packed up for home, saddened with the news that a fellow racer had died.
My thoughts go out to Steve’s family and friends for their loss.
